I'm not sure what's holding me back from doing so but I don't want to call this show a Masterpiece. I also have to admit that it's one of the best anime I've seen in a long time. definitely one of the top ranking in story and still fairly above average in animation. Arguably, some of the fight scenes feel like they could push the animation ranking up even further.

And for an anime that came out in 2006, it feels like a carefully crafted hybrid between old-school and modern anime. I even wonder if this is one of the shows that helped shape what it is we see as modern anime. Time and again Code Geass took me for a ride with its twists and surprises around every corner. Especially in moments where you knew a twist was coming only for it to push the twist even further and in a direction more surprising than you could have imagined. Yet there was never a moment where it felt like it pushed it beyond what was believable in the narrative. Where Code Geass outshines so many other anime's and shows is in how it balances what information it gives and how much it withholds. I wish the writer taught a master class on how it managed to pull it off. If you haven't seen this anime yet, I highly recommend trying it out. Even after 1 episode you will have a good idea of what to expect from the rest of the show. As much as I liked the show, there are 2 moments that I didn't like. I would also like to add at this moment that there are about 50 episodes in the anime. So only 2 moments is pretty impressive.
If you've seen the show I'm pretty sure you know about the first moment. I've seen a lot of fans in the comments try to justify it but I think it went too far. But there is a character early on in the show that has romantic feelings for a character and expresses them not only in an extreme way but also in a way that catches the viewer off guard. And while the characters romantic feelings are kind of important for the show, I feel there are a lot better ways the show could have shown it. The other moment is a bit more subtle that takes place near the end but I feel that the main Prince seems to shift a bit in what he's willing to do seemingly out of nowhere. Or he was great at hiding his intentions behind a mask. Which wouldn't be out of place in this kind of show. I just couldn't recall any moments before hand that eluded to the idea that he might be that kind of person. That's my thoughts on the show. If you've seen the show what are your thoughts on it? Also, if you have any anime recommendations please share them with me either in the comments, email, or any of my socials!
I've recently started working away at my anime backlog (sounds on brand doesn't it?) and with Code Geass finished, I've started The Garden of Sinners. So I'll let you know how that goes.

While this isnt a traditional Code Geass Review, I still wanted to share my thoughts after having completed the anime for the first time. In a few months I plan to come back and watch its theatrical remakes as well as some of its other spinoffs but for now I am ready to change gears with something new.
